Sundowning and Dementia, what is it?

Sundowning, also known as sundown syndrome, is a common and challenging symptom experienced by individuals with dementia. It refers to the confusion, agitation, and restlessness that some people with dementia experience in the late afternoon and early evening. During this time, their behavior and mood may become unpredictable and difficult to manage, causing distress for both the individual and their caregivers.

The exact cause of sundowning is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to changes in the circadian rhythm and the release of hormones such as melatonin. This phenomenon can be exacerbated by other factors such as fatigue, medication, or changes in environment. It can also be a sign of underlying distress or unmet needs such as hunger, thirst, or discomfort.

Managing sundowning can be difficult, but there are steps that can be taken to minimize its impact. Some tips include establishing a routine and structure to the day, ensuring adequate exposure to light during the day, and reducing stimulation in the evening.

Additionally, having a clock that displays morning, afternoon and evening, along with the time can help your senior stay oriented. For example, this can help them determine the difference between 6am and 6pm. ViewClix's "Day-Clock" feature can help with sundowning. With the Day-Clock, they'll see (example picture included):

  • Current time with AM/PM.
  • Day of the week.
  • Time of day: morning, afternoon or evening.
  • Expanded date.
  • Current outdoor temperature with an icon showing weather conditions.

Ensuring the person with dementia is comfortable, well-fed, and has access to the bathroom can also help. If necessary, medication can be prescribed to help manage the symptoms of sundowning. It's important to remember that sundowning is a common symptom of dementia and should not be considered a personal failure. With the right approach and support, it is possible to minimize its impact and improve the quality of life for both the individual with dementia and their caregivers.
